Across the tropics and Global South, people face deforestation, fisheries collapse, water scarcity, and extreme heat—yet often lack timely, relevant, comprehensible information. Insights exist, but rarely reach the local decision-makers whose choices shape ecosystems. These micro decision-makers—smallholder farmers, artisanal fishers, Indigenous land stewards, and community forest leaders—often operate in information deserts.

A Tool to Bridge the Last-Mile Communication Gap

Mongabay is developing StoryTransformer, a tool designed to convert critical environmental information into languages, formats, and delivery modes that are relevant, accessible, and actionable to the people making on-the-ground decisions about land, water, and resource use.

Unlike conventional media strategies that prioritize broad audiences or political influence, StoryTransformer is built for localized utility. It adapts original source materials into concise, culturally resonant outputs: a short Tagalog explainer on fisheries closures, a 90-second Swahili WhatsApp audio on forests and clean water, a simplified SMS in Nigerian Pidgin on mangrove restoration, or a Marathi infographic on water-efficient agriculture. The result: more people, in more places, can access reliable information—and use it.

Designed for Decision-Makers, Not Just Readers

StoryTransformer targets individuals whose decisions affect ecosystem health at a meaningful scale, even if those decisions unfold in villages or small cooperatives. These include:

  • Farmers choosing between short-term profit and long-term soil health
  • Fishers weighing the risks and benefits of seasonal closures
  • Community leaders navigating land rights pressures from external actors

By equipping these actors with practical, scientifically grounded information, Story Transformer strengthens their capacity to make more sustainable choices.

StoryTransformer is currently in development mode. We expect to launch in 2026!
